When the Moon Hits Your Eye

Our second try on the grill was a bit ambitious for our expertise. I was completely convinced we should make pizza. Basically I have drooled over everyone else's grilled pizza this summer and I wanted some for myself.  Well, it didn't take much convincing to get Mr. J on board.  Pretty much I asked and he shook his head yes enthusiastically. 


I opted to use some of the left over summer squash and zucchini.  Mr. J added ham and peppers.


We are still working on the actual transfer on and off the gill part.  My pizza got a bit messy in the process.

In the end it was a bit charred on the bottom.  Does this mean the grill was too hot when we put the pizza on?


Looks pretty sweet from the top view.  This is definitely something we are going to have to try again.  Sometime soon!  Even with the black bottom this was one good supper.

  1. I have found if you turn the heat down after you initiallly heat the grill, that the bottom won't brown near as quick. I always keep an eye on the bottom of my pizza just in case. If it starts to look a little too done, I slide it onto tin foil or slide it under the broiler in my oven =)

  4. I have yet to try grilling pizza! I need to just do it sometime! I have heard the tip of turning the heat way down as soon as you put the dough on. Not sure how it works, but worth a try!

  5. I loooove grilled pizza! My husband and I have made it so many times! Here's what we've learned...a pizza peel is best for transferring the dough on and off the grill. As for the charred...the side you first grilled is the side with your toppings. The charred bottom you notice might come from the rate at which you top the pizza. Moving slow and waiting for cheese to melt takes too much time for the crust. We always remove our dough from heat, top it, then return it to the grill, basically just to melt the cheese. Hope this helps!

  6. I make grilled pizza ALL the time! Im a bit of a grill freak (I do competition BBQ, if you ever need grill tips im here!) My suggestion - Whenever I make pizza on the grill I make sure every topping is ready and in a bowl easy to grab..I stretch out my dough to the size I want it and put it on the grill..no toppings. I let the dough get golden brown..only about 1 minute. I flip it over..add my toppings...and I just wait til the cheese melts..turns out perfect everytime

  7. The last time a friend and I tried to grill pizza, the grill tried to eat the dough. It was very challenging. Yours looks pretty good!

  8. YAY! Pizza! I love it. I find that I cook my pizza dough first til almost done and then cook on INDIRECT heat with the toppings on. No matter...your pizza looked amazing!

  10. Anything pizza always gets my vote. I do plan to make my first attempt at grilling it, so I will have to see how mine turn out. Yours looks tasty. I never would have known they got too brown on the bottom if you hadn't let us know! Have a good weekend!

  11. I would be inclined to par bake pizza blanks in an oven and then top them to cook on the grill.
    But trust me I have little or no experience with grilling anything let alone pizza LOL

    It looks good all the same
