HelloFresh for Dinner

My life gets busy sometimes. Crazy how time flies by.  Friday night turns into Monday morning too fast.  Too fast for grocery shopping.  So when I heard about a company that mails you meals via ingredients and recipe calls come Wednesday night I thought, yes I could use that in my life.

HelloFresh sends meals straight to your door with servings of 2, 4, or 6.  You can pick classic meat dishes or vegetarian options. The week before you will receive an email with five options and you pick three.

We had some much fun opening the box and making these meals. The recipe calls have a list of ingredients, nutrition facts and instructions with pictures.

Since there is two of us we ordered the two person serving.  The portions were big and we easily had leftovers. Or more specifically I had leftovers. Mr. J ate all of his up at the first sitting.

Our first meal was pork chops with pear compote and grits.  You get all of the ingredients needed for this meal in the exact measurements you need. I don't know if this is why all of the meals seemed so easy to prepare.  I also felt that the clean up was very minimal.

As for price, our box was $69 for the three classic meat meals.  This was a bit more than our typical price of groceries for three meals but definitely less than if we had gone out to eat for three meals.  The convenience was helpful.  No need to go get groceries. No thought about what to make.

Pros:
  • Delivery right to your door mid-week
  • 30 minute meals, easy clean up
  • Large portions
  • Variety of options to pick from each week
  • Delicious food
Cons:
  • Options include meat or vegetarian, no other dietary restrictions are available (All of the ingredients are wrapped separately though so you can leave out certain foods to suit your tastes)
  • Deliveries are only on Wednesday, if you aren't there it won't work
  • Cost is more expensive them my typical 3 meal grocery bill

If you want to try out HelloFresh I currently have a discount code that will give you $20 off your first delivery. Just type in ZUGF6T when you order.

Pork Chops with Pear and Grits

by Emily Morris, HelloFresh
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes
Keywords: saute entree pork
Ingredients (serves 2)
  • 2 boneless pork chops
  • 1 pear
  • 1/4 cup red onion
  • 3 Tbsp parsley
  • 1/4 cup corn
  • 1/2 cup grits
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 Tbsp steak sauce
  • 1 cube chicken bouillon
  • 2 oz cream cheese
  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1/2 Tbsp olive oil
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Core and slice pear. Chop parsley and red onion finely.
Put stock cube into a pot with 1 1/2 cups of water and bring to a boil until the cube is dissolved. Stir occasionally.

Add the grits to the stock, stir for a minute and then cover and lower the temperature. Cook for about 20 minutes until smooth and tender.

Season pork with salt and pepper. Heat oil in a pan over medium high heat and when hot, sear the pork 2 minutes per side until browned. Transfer pan into oven and bake for 8-10 minutes until pork is cooked medium (a little pink in the center).

In the grits pan, add the cream cheese and blend together. Fold in the corn and red onions. Cover and keep warm until ready to serve the pork.

When pork is done, place on separate plate to rest. In the same pan add pears and cook for 4 minutes until brown and tender. Return pork to pan. Stir in steak sauce and honey into the pan and mix to coat the pork.

  2. There was just a really interesting article about this in the NYTimes--I can see the advantages to it, not that it will be offered in Anchorage anytime soon!
